Monarch migration through Georgia peaks September 29th through October 11th on their migration journey to overwinter in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico.
How do we know all this? Monarchs are tracked annually through a tagging program facilitated by Monarch Watch. A small, light, sticky numbered tag is applied to one hind wing where it won’t affect their flight. Thousands of volunteers tag Monarch butterflies across North America annually. When a Monarch is recovered in Mexico, the tag is recorded, educating scientist where the butterfly came from and to where it migrated.
A Butterfly Tale tags Monarchs annually because a lot of data is still needed to understand where these beautiful butterflies migrate from and to annually. Don’t miss out on this unique experience and to be a part of the 2015 Monarch Butterfly Migration!
